Lot description

Employing comic characters and toy imagery in his work, Trova reached his mature style with the medium of sculpture. From his series of Abstract Variations, this table-top work is a highly-polished, cast stainless steel figure standing aside a colorful three-dimensional abstract form.

Ernest Tino Trova was born on February 19, 1927 in Clayton, Missouri. He was a self-trained American Surrealist and Pop Art painter as well as a sculptor. Trova’s early works maintained a distinctly Abstract Expressionist style, but he went on to create his now famous "Falling Man" series, which featured sculptural works in a variety of media, styles, poses, and forms. The works from his 1963 solo show at the inaugural exhibition of the Pace Gallery, entitled “Falling Man Paintings,” sold out to institutions including the Whitney Museum of American Art and the MOMA.
