Ernest Crichlow was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY becoming a social realist painter during the Harlem Renaissance and printmaker during the WPA federal arts project. He was a teacher at the Harlem Community Arts Center and worked for the Greensboro Art Project in North Carolina. His art often depicted racial violence and conflict experienced by blacks in this country, as well as touching portraiture of black youths.
