Lot description
Emil Bisttram (1895-1976) founded the ‘Transcendental Painting Group’ with Raymond Jonson to study non-objective painting that, unlike the non-objectivity of Hilla Rebay and Rolph Scarlett, held lofty aspirations of spirituality. Bisttram studied in New York with Leon Kroll before traveling West. His 1931 Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship enabled him to study in Mexico with Diego Rivera before finally settling in Taos, New Mexico where he founded the Taos School of Art; his activity helped spawn an artist’s community.
