Lot description
Edmund Teske, Madison Grammar School Demolition, Chicago. Composite with Shirley Berman and Shiva Nude images, 1937. Gelatin silver print, 10 x 10.5 inches (25.4 x 26.7 cm). Stamped.

Edmund Teske (American, 1911-1996) began seriously photographing in 1932. In the early 30s, Teske met photographers Max Thorek, Edwin Boland, and A.George Miller in the theatre department at the Jane Addams Hull House.

Teske distinguished himself stylistically by experimenting with darkroom techniques. Mixing various concentrations of photo chemicals and then blasting intense concentrations of light onto high-contrast paper, Teske created dramatic color stains and streaking effects. The resulting photographs are dreamlike, somewhat psychedelic, and powerful enough to alter and transform our perception of the visual world.
