Lot description

Ruscha experimented with words, creating visual alliterations that would convey the essence of the word itself. With "Sex" Ruscha takes on a word that can never truly be defined visually. Ruscha takes on many meanings of sex, using a Chinese typeface, as if to suggest the eroticism of the Orient, a hovering smoke cloud to suggest the cigarette after, and dripping red forms to suggest, the blood and violence-or the lust that sex acts can take on. Previously to “Sex” he created a portfolio with the words: Now and OK; the work he made right before sex was "sky," where he had the word sky embody its own meaning, through the use of red and black, implying the sun setting over the backdrop of darkness. "Sex" is imbued with the essence of what Ruscha does best – a California pop style with whimsy and a dry sense of humor.
