Lot description
Plate size is 18.25 x 24 inches (46.4 x 61 cm).

Eadweard Muybridge is most famous for his split-second studies of motion, which began in 1872 with an attempt to capture the movement of a galloping horse. By 1877 he had developed a technique to place 12 cameras in a row to capture each stage of the subjects movement. A total of 781 plates with subjects including men, women, children, birds and animals comprised the complete series.

The Collotype process was used between 1870 and 1920. Typically a glass plate was coated with sensitised gelatin and exposed under a negative. Light passing through the negative would harden the gelatin on the glass plate. The unexposed gelatin would absorb the water when washed and the exposed gelatin would repel it. The washed glass plate would then be coated with ink, adhering to the exposed gelatin and printed onto fine paper.
