Much of Douglas Gordon's work is a study of time, repetition and recollection. His best-known works include “Feature Film” (1999), a feature-length video in which the camera focuses on the hands of conductor James Conlon, as he leads a performance of the score to Hitchcock’s “Vertigo”. Hands (and particularly Gordon's own) are a recurring motif in his art - as they are in this work specifically. Here the artist created a three-part photographic series documenting a performance. The artist sprayed his hand with gold lacquer and shows the paint dripping off his fingers. The vigorous removal of the gold-coated layer of skin makes reference to his video series “Divided Self” from the late 1990s, in which various parts of Gordon’s body, including his arms, interact. The photographs invoke discourse around the artists' body as a source of visual creation and the sequential quality of the photographs express Gordon’s engagement with processes in time.
