Lot description
Dorothy Dehner’s fascination with line and perspective is not only realized in her three-dimensional sculptures, but is also evident in her two-dimensional works on paper. Stepping away from sculpture, Calder often explored other mediums, frequently creating paper reliefs, like this late work 'Outer Space' from 1987. Through this medium, Dehner explores the principles of abstraction further.

Primarily exploring abstraction American artist Dorothy Dehner (1901-1994) was constantly experimenting with various mediums throughout her career working in painting, drawing, printmaking and sculpting. Dehner originally went to school for dancing and acting, but after an influential trip to Europe she began to focus her study on art. Her early works were primarily paintings in the cubist style, but by the 1950's she began to explore the medium of sculpture. Since her death in 1994 her work has gone on to be exhibited at the Susan Conway Gallery, Washington, D.C. (1999), the Kraushaar Galleries Inc, New York, NY (2001) among others.
