'Incense Sticks' is an exciting and sublime oil painting by famous Vietnamese post-Modern painter, Do Quang Em. This work is an important example from Em's recent series of lush, surreal still-life paintings. At center, a small blue and white porcelain vessel holds tall incense sticks, and stands next to a charming Origami colored-paper figure. These objects are dramatically spot-lit from an ethereal light source, and are placed upon a wooden table, draped with a bright red, blue and yellow striped scarf. This traditional scene is transformed into a surreal dreamscape by its other-worldly context, appearing to float in the dark, a feeling heightened by the lush chartreuse background. Em's interest in harmony of color, composition and subject matter is exemplified in "Incense Sticks" in stunning microscopic detail, with the unique play of light and shade and the seemly endless space endowing the simple objects her with a literal and philosophical Oriental beauty.

Do Quang Em (B. 1942, Vietnam), graduated from the Gia Dinh National College of Fine Arts in 1965. The artist is considered one of the great post-Modern Vietnamese painters, with his work the subject of gallery and museum exhibitions world-wide, and highly sought after in both the primary and secondary markets.
