Lot description
American photographer and filmmaker David LaChapelle (b. 1963) seamlessly blends pop culture, fashion and high art in his provocative and often comical photographs. Deeply influenced by Surrealism, LaChapelle’s work walks the line between fashion and fine arts, as he often melds canonical images from art history with contemporary figures and settings. Known for his work in the fields of fashion, advertising, and fine art photography, LaChapelle expanded his production to include videos and has filmed many successful music videos, advertisements, and also television show trailers. He landed a photography job at Andy Warhol’s ‘Interview’ magazine while still in high school, and attended both the North Carolina School of the Arts and the School of Visual Arts in New York City.

His portraits of celebrities successfully exaggerate aspects of their personalities and their personal lives, and the artist has photographed many celebrities for popular magazines, including Rolling Stone, Vogue, and Vanity Fair.

LaChapelle currently works in studios in New York and Paris.
