Lot description
Purchased directly from the artist 1989.

David Hostetler (b. 1926) is an American wood carver and bronze sculptor. Hostetler is best known for his large wood carvings of women and has earned wide acclaim for his unique treatment of the female form. Most of his pieces begin as wood carvings from indigenous hardwoods with bronze versions being cast directly from the wood. Hostetler began his artistic career while convalescing after an injury to his leg. He received drawing supplies while in the hospital and so sparked his interest in art. He received his Masters of Fine Art from Ohio University in 1949 where he taught for 38 years, eventually becoming a professor Emeritus. His style ranges from folk images to stylized forms. He bases his work on capturing the spirit, romance, and earthiness of “the feminine”. His works are moving and intriguing investigations of form inspired by goddesses and woman of historical significance. Hostetler’s work can be seen publicly at many museums, galleries and outdoor spaces including the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, the Milwaukee Museum, and the Butler Institute of American Art in Youngstown, Ohio.
