Lot description

'Amaryllis in Vase' from Hockney's 1984-87 'Moving Focus' series, is one of the artist's most coveted large-scale color lithographs printed from ten aluminum plates. Created with Ken Tyler, the Moving Focus print series were the culmination of Hockney’s experimentation with Cubism. The painterly quality of 'Amaryllis in Vase' reveals Hockney's mastery of complex printing techniques. The series was based on a series of drawings he had done the autumn before he began this collaboration with Tyler Graphics.

An important contributor to the Pop art movement of the 1960s, David Hockney is considered one of the most influential British artists of the twentieth century. Best-known for his 1960s series featuring Los Angeles swimming pools and their denizens, Hockney paints in a bright and deliberately naive style drawing his subject matter from popular culture. In his first mature works of the 1950s, Hockney painted narratives, often unabashedly featuring gay themes, in an expressionistic almost childlike manner. Moving to California inspired him to produce the simplified archaic forms in bright California colors for which he is now best known. David Hockney is based in Yorkshire and London, England.
