Dan Wiener, Martin Luther King Jr., 1957. Gelatin silver print, 8 x 10 inches, 20.32 x 25.4 cm.

Wiener has a place in history for his photographs of the civil rights movement, with pictures of its leaders, including this fine portrait of Martin Luther King.

Dan Weiner (1919–1959) was an American photojournalist, whose work was published primarily by Fortune magazine. He was born in New York City and studied painting at the Art Students League and the Pratt Institute. He eventually shifted to photography and joined the Photo League. Weiner served in the Army Air Force during World War II. After the war he became a photojournalist. He died in a plane crash with the subject of a story he was working on.
