"Untitled (from Hawaii)" (2007/2012) is a stunning, museum-level, and unique (ed 1/1) monumental photograph by famed Japanese photographer, Daido Moriyama (Japan, b. 1938), measuring an impressive 78.75 x 118.15 inches (200 x 300 cm), professionally framed floated and in perfect condition. Here the artist depicts one of the Hawaiian islands, not as a lush tropical oasis, but rather as a powerful rock jutting from the sea, a removed, isolated space. Shot from a birds-eye perspective and in black and white, this motif and method is typical of Moriyama's oeuvre. This photograph is new to the secondary market and comes to this sale from a top Private Collection, Japan, and was acquired in 2012 directly from Taka Ishii Gallery, Japan, who formally represents the artist. The printer worked directly with Moriyama in the 2012 printing of this unique edition photograph, creating a special negative from the original 35mm negative from 2007. This allowed the work to be printed at a monumental scale while still allowing the artist to control the exposure.
One of the most important and accomplished Japanese photographers of the postwar era, Daido Moriyama (b. 1938) is famous for his decades long body of work that features everyday objects or landscapes shot from unfamiliar angles, giving them an isolated perspective, and is typically stark and highly contrasted. His images profoundly affect the viewer on many emotional levels, all without the use of color, and are infused with a modern aesthetic sensibility that conflates Asian and Western artistic traditions. The artist is formally represented by Luhring Augustine Gallery in the U.S and Taka Ishii Gallery in Asia. His work has been the subject of countless museum and gallery shows, as well as books and periodicals. Recent solo exhibtions include 2008: "Daido Retrospective 1965-2005", National Museum of Art, Osaka; 2010: "Hawaii", Luhring Augustine, New York, U.S. and again in 2010: "Visioni del Mondo", Fotomuseo Guiseppe Panini, Modena, Italy; 2011: "On the Road", National Museum of Art, Osaka.
