Lot description
With an explosion of color and pattern so loved by the artist, this acrylic on canvas by CRASH was executed in 1991 and exemplifies his iconic compositional style. Known for his appropriation of comic book characters and neo-pop imagery, this painting features Captain America surrounded by tumultuous visual display of abstracted forms and spliced perspectives. Infusing a unique sense of complexity with such an iconic superhero, CRASH distorts perceptions while blending themes of high art and low culture together in a single work.

Graffiti legend, John "CRASH" Matos, is now regarded as a pioneer of the international Graffiti art movement. CRASH was one of the most successful of the group of artists who exhibited in the premier Graffiti theme show at Sidney Janis Gallery during the late 80s. His method of painting is more complex than was his peers and incorporated carefully-chosen pop imagery. The artist was spray-painting New York City subway cars by age 13, and soon moved from simple 'tagging', to full-image artworks transferred onto canvas. His early murals on dilapidated buildings and subway trains inspired a generation of painters. In addition to being feature in MOCA’s groundbreaking ‘Art in the Streets’ exhibition in 2011, CRASH has shown extensively throughout the world with shows at Addict Galerie (Paris, FR), The Esplanade (Singapore), Opera Gallery (London, UK), and Toy Tokyo Underground (New York, NY), among others.
