Christian Schoeler’s interest in fashion and photography is apparent in this oil on panel painting, ‘Untitled (Sebastian #001, 01/09)’. Appearing almost like a blurred photograph, Schoeler depicts a posing figure modeling clothes. Though the room, clothes, and face are vague, Schoeler's image captures sensations of melancholy and yearning that are expressed through the model's stance.

Known for his delicate portrayals of his youth, German painter Christian Schoeler (b.1979) provides a beautiful and vulnerable approach to the subject of masculinity. Schoeler graduated from the University of Essen, Germany in 2003 and went on to study under Günther Förg at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, Germany. Shortly after completing his studies in 2007, he collaborated with Louis Vuitton designer Paul Helbers on painted canvas suit for Esquire Magazine’s Singular Suit Project in 2009 and on a series of hand-painted leather bags for Vuitton’s 2010/2011 men’s wear collection. His work has gained international acclaim and has been featured in major exhibitions worldwide. Recently, Schoeler’s work was the subject of solo shows at Galerie Urs Meile, Beijing, China (2011); Schuebbe Projects, Dusseldorf, Germany (2010); Galerie Helene Lamargue, Paris, France (2009); and The Dazed Gallery, London, UK (2009).
