Lot description
Byron Brown playfully reinterprets the early Cubist collages of Picasso and Braque in this 'Head of a Woman' depicting a bird as it flits past a woman with an oversized hat.

The artist's obituary from 1961 is affixed to the verso (see images).

American modernist Byron Brown (1907-1961) was an early advocate of abstract art, and was a leader of the American Avant Garde art movement in the 1930s and 40s along with Willem de Kooning, Ilya Bolotowsky, and Ashile Gorky. Brown is known for creating abstracted compositions based on imagery from still lifes and portraits. His work recalls the structured forms of analytical Cubism, while maintaining a painterly style that evokes the Abstract Expressionist sensibility at the time that was concurrent with his own work. Brown taught painting at the Arts Student League from 1948-1959, and later at New York University from 1959 until his death in 1961. The Arts Student League named a scholarship in Brown's name, and his work is in the permanent collection of numerous museums, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the National Museum of American Art in Washington, D.C, and the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston.
