Lot description
Executed in 1989, this work on paper by artist Bryan Hunt captures the push-pull elements of spontaneity and intentionality seen in much of his work. With a sweeping sense of energetic line balanced by the stoic abstract form in the center, Hunt infuses his softly colored composition with a unique complexity often seen in his sculpture. The inscription along the bottom recto of the piece reads "For Willoughby June 1989." It was inscribed to Willoughby Sharp (deceased), founder of Avalanche Magazine in the 1970s and a semi-frequent presence in the art scene. Sharp helped launch the careers of a number of successful artists during the '70s and was a close friend of Joseph Beuys.

Known for his expressive sculpture of organic twisting forms, modernist artist Bryan Hunt (b. 1947, Terre Haute, IN) draws inspiration from the unconscious to create incredibly dynamic artwork. Striving to find a balance between the spontaneous and the deliberate, Hunt explores the negative space created by his work as much as the piece itself. He received his BFA from Otis Art Institute of Los Angeles in 1971 and has received numerous awards including the American Academy of Arts and Letters Award in Art and the New York City Arts Commission Award for Design Excellence. The artist has had numerous exhibitions the world over including shows at the Museum of Modern Art (New York, NY), Seoul Olympic Museum of Art (Seoul, Korea), Jablonka Galerie (Cologne, Germany), and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (San Francisco, CA), among others.
