Lot description
Painting in a post-modern environment, Fisher's work combines his experiences of living and painting in New York City in the 1980's, his interest in street and outsider art, and the admitted influence of artists such as Chris Wool, Basquiat and Twombly. "UPTOWN" (2012) is a tour-de force oil painting on panel by internationally famed American Contemporary abstract artist Bill Fisher (Buffalo, NY US, b. 1957). This dynamic five-by-five foot work is one of the artist's newest paintings from his decade-long series and is an unabashed example of Fisher's completely assured and rigorous thematic vocabulary based on the confluence of bold and colorful shapes, signs, objects, and text both stenciled and scrawled.

Fisher is represented in New York by the prestigious O.K. Harris Gallery, and was signed by esteemed gallerist Ivan Karp, the legendary early director of the Leo Castelli Gallery, NY. It was Karp who discovered Fisher's work nearly 10 years ago and signed him immediately, recognizing his talent immediately. He received his M.F.A from Radford University and his most recent six month solo museum exhibition took place at The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Richmond, VA in 2011-12.
