Lot description
Printed by Abbott probably 1950's. Small crease in sign and small stain in upper left corner; otherwise excellent condition.

Berenice Abbott's body of work encapsulated a particular era in New York. Funded by the Federal Art Project (FAP), Berenice Abott's Changing New York project relentlessly records the landscape of the rapidly expanding city, from the average butcher- and barber-shops to landmarks like the Flatiron building. She portrays a city full of contradictions, as the old was being torn down to make way for new construction. Inspired by the straightforward journalistic style of Eugène Atget, Abbott's photographs, such as Hardware Store, 316-318 Bowery, New York, 1938, capture the architectural and cultural history of New York in the period between the Depression and the Second World War.
