Lot description
Vintage print.

Berenice Abbott's body of work encapsulated a particular era in New York. Funded by the Federal Art Project (FAP), Berenice Abott's Changing New York project relentlessly records the landscape of the rapidly expanding city, from the average butcher- and barber-shops to landmarks like the Flatiron building. She portrays a city full of contradictions, as the old was being torn down to make way for new construction. Inspired by the straightforward journalistic style of Eugène Atget, Abbott's photographs, such as "Billboards and Signs, Flatbush Avenue between Fulton Street, Brooklyn, Between State Street and Ashland Place" capture the architectural and cultural history of New York in the period between the Depression and the Second World War.
