Stamped, blind stamped “S. Pedo / 131 Via Sistina Rome” and wet stamped verso with the same name, indicating that the print was originally sold by this art dealer in Rome rather than coming from Von Gloeden’s shop in Taormina. Pencil indication verso “Foto del Barone von Gloeden”.

Lot description

Vintage print. This piece is custom framed in black wood molding with an 8-ply ovemat.

Condition: Some wrinkles and creasing, which have been greatly lessened through conservation. Also, a repaired tear lower right. (A conservation report accompanies the print.)

Baron Wilhelm von Gloeden was a German photographer who worked mainly in Italy. He is mostly known for his pastoral nude studies of Sicilian boys. From a modern standpoint, his work is commendable due to his controlled use of lighting as well as the often elegant poses of his models. Innovative use of photographic filters and special body makeup contribute to the artistic perfection of his works. Famous in his own day, his work was subsequently eclipsed for close to a century, only to re-emerge in recent times as one the most important gay visual artist of the pre–World War I era.
