Lot description
A prime example of artist Aya Takano's fusion of science fiction, manga, and kawaii, "Primitive 2 (for Cripton)" portrays two androgynous figures in bright colors and bold, lyrical line. Referencing ancient woodblock prints from the Edo period, "Primitive 2 (for Cripton) echos the sensual scenes often depicted in the multi-colored prints. Devoid of individual attributes, the two wide-eyed figures huddle together in an entanglement of limbs, as a school of goldfish idly swim by.

Having trained under Takashi Murakami’s Kaikai Kiki studio, Japanese artist Aya Takano (b.1976) is known for her futuristic approach to art. Associated with the Superflat movement, Takano's work typically depicts large-eyed female heroines in surreal ultra-modern cityscapes, which represents her major influences of manga and American science fiction. Born in Saitama, Japan, Takano received her B.A. from Tama Art University in Tokyo. Her work has been exhibited throughout the world, including, Galerie Emmanuel Perrotin, Paris, France; Art Tower Mito, Mito, Japan; Galerie Emmanuel Perrotin, Miami, FL; Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art, Gateshead, UK; Parco Gallery, Tokyo, Japan; and the Helsinki Museum of Art, Helsinki, Finland.
