Lot description
Axel Hütte’s “Explorer Glacier III, Alaska” (1999) presents a horizontal expanse of glacier in shades of blue and white, a fantastic example of the conceptual photographer’s work. Known as a "landscape painter" among contemporary photographers, Axel Hütte is part of a generation of German photographers that includes Thomas Struth, Thomas Ruff, and Andreas Gursky, all of whom studied with Bernd Becher.

Born in Essen, Germany, in 1951, Artist Axel Hütte went on to study with Bernd Becher at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. During this time he shared a studio space with Andreas Gursky and Thomas Demand. In 1982, Hütte received a DAAD scholarship to study in London. In 1984, Hütte had his first solo exhibition at the prestigious Konrad Fischer Galerie in Dusseldorf. Hütte went on to show at important international venues, such as Rotterdamse Kunststichting (Rotterdam, the Netherlands, 1989); the Hamburger Kunsthalle (Hamburg, Germany, 1993) the Rheinisches Landesmuseum (Bonn, Germany, 1995), the Fotomuseum Winterthur (Winterthur, Switzerland, 1997), and the Foundation for Photography (Amsterdam, the Netherlands, 2001). A major retrospective of Hütte's work was recently presented by the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, in Madrid, Spain, in 2004.
