One of his most famous photographs, 'Submerged' is a rare and iconic work by famous Contemporary, New Delhi-born Indian artist Atul Bhalla. Bhalla has achieved international success for his photographs, which explore social, political and environmental issues. One of the recurring themes in Bhalla’s work is water. Through interesting juxtapositions of cultures and times, as well as autobiographical themes, Bhalla’s works highlight and raise questions about the potential consequences of straying so far from ancient traditions and cultures, and embracing modernization.

This photograph was included in the Museum exhibition: ‘PUBLIC PLACES/PRIVATE SPACES’ :Contemporary Indian Photography and Video, Newark Museum, New Jersey, US (2009) and was the cover image of the accompanying exhibition catalogue. The artist has received numerous awards for his work and has been the subject of many group and solo Museum exhibitions, world-wide. Bhalla received his BFA from Delhi University and his MFA from the School of Art of Northern Illinois University. He currently lives and works in New Delhi.
