Lot description
As one of the original members of the Neo-Geo movement in the 1980s, Ashley Bickerton critiqued contemporary institutions through a sarcastic mix of appropriated imagery and materials that defined his subject matter. In the 1990s, Bickerton began to concern his work with themes relating to memory, loss, and his own psychological state by focusing on representations of the environment and the preservation of the natural world. As is demonstrated in his topographic recreations of the ocean floor, Bickerton uses the shapes and patterns created by nature to express personal and internal anecdotes. Here, Bickerton uses plant models and paint on hydra stone to create three dimensional dioramas that are cast in resin to mimic the look of a tropical ocean with Atolls (coral islands) as seen from above. Hung on the wall, the fictitious seascape is an attempt to preserve nature while simultaneously acting as an abstract expression of an internal state of longing for a distant, unattainable place.

With his mixed media paintings and assemblages that combined traditional techniques with appropriated elements, Ashley Bickerton (b.1959) explored contemporary issues regarding money and power. Born in Barbados, Bickerton received a BFA from California Institute of the Arts in 1982 before moving to New York City to participate in the Whitney Museum Independent Studies Program. In New York, Bickerton established himself as a prominent figure in the 1980’s East Village art scene and was included in the pivotal 1986 Sonnabend Gallery four person exhibition along with Jeff Koons, Peter Halley, and Meyer Vaisman, which pioneered the Neo-Geo movement. His work, along with other Neo-Geo artists, was featured in the 2004 retrospective, ‘East Village USA’ at the New Museum of Contemporary Art, New York, NY. Recently, Bickerton’s work has been the subject of solo shows at 313 Gallery, Seoul, Korea (2012); Lehmann Maupin, New York, NY (2011); White Cube, London, UK (2009); and Singapore Tyler Print Institute, Singapore (2006). Bickerton currently lives and works in Kuta Bali, Indonesia.
