Lot description
This 2006 work by Armen Eloyan is executed with heavy impasto in stark tones of black, white, and gray. Imbued with an acerbic wit, it evinces the rare combination of cartoonish motifs and highly expressive painterly qualities that distinguish Eloyan's style.

Armen Eloyan (b. 1966) is an Armenian painter best known for his darkly humorous and expressive paintings that often feature cartoon figures. After leaving Armenia in 1991, Eloyan studied art in the Netherlands, and went on to develop an artistic style heavily influenced by abstract expressionist painters such as Willem de Kooning. He has had recent solo exhibitions at the Tim Van Laere Gallery, Antwerp, BE (2012); Timothy Taylor Gallery, London, England (2008, 2009); Galerie Bob van Orsouw, Zürich, Switzerland (2006, 2009); and the Fries Museum, Leeuwarden, Netherlands (2005). He has also participated in group shows at Galerie Polad-Hardouin, Paris, France (2009, 2011); Galleri Magnus Karlsson, Stockholm, Sweden (2011); Kunsthalle Bern, Switzerland (2006, 2010); Andrea Rosen Gallery, New York, NY (2010), among many others. He lives and works in Zürich, Switzerland and Amsterdam, Netherlands.
