Lot description
Executed shortly after his first solo show at the Rowan Gallery in London, this early example of Antony Donaldson’s graphic Pop art style was produced as a working study for the larger painting, ‘Pretend She Was The Queen of Sheba’. Exhibiting Donaldson’s characteristic use of primary colors and geometry – a De Stijl influence – the bold design of ‘The Queen of Sheba’ is composed from the pared down forms of pin-up inspired female figures. The basic and flat shapes and colors from the scantily clad women are interwoven, creating an amusing, kaleidoscope effect on the paper.

Affiliated with the British Pop Art movement of the 1960s through his friendships with Royal College of Art students, Patrick Caulfield, Allen Jones, and Peter Phillips, Antony Donaldson (b.1939) produced bold yet simple representations of youthful, confident women that capture the attitudes and desires of the time. Donaldson studied at the Slade School of Art and has earned numerous accolades for his work, including the 1962 Second Prize Guinness Award and the Harkness Foundation Fellowship that brought him to the United States in 1966 to 1968. While his work has been included in many group shows on Pop Art, Donaldson’s work has also been the subject of recent solo exhibitions at Galerie du Centre, Paris, France (2009) and Paisnel Gallery, London, England (2008).
