An original aquatint and etching printed on Guarro paper in excellent condition, "Cercle" is from the series "U No Es Ningú," which is comprised of 12 etchings and 2 lithographs.

Tàpies' works are praised for their tactile quality that carries over to his prints as well. He created his first etchings as early as 1948, interested in the collaborative nature of printing processes involving the publisher, printer and artist. In this particular work, the geometrical shapes seem to foreshadow contemporary graffiti art, while at the same time looking to the past by mirroring ancient art forms that incorporated flat symbols on two-dimensional surfaces.

Antoni Tàpies (b. December 13, 1923, Barcelona, Spain) is a one of the best known Catalan artists to emerge since World War II. After studying law for three years, Tàpies chose in 1943 to devote the rest of his professional life to painting. A self-taught painter and printer, Tàpies began as a surrealist artist and his early works show the influence of Joan Miró. However, he soon found his niche as an artist separate from formal art movements, working in a style known as "pintura matérica," which incorporates nontraditional materials into painting. He is also known for co-founding Spain’s first Post-War Movement known as Dau-al-Set. Tàpies founded the group, which was connected to the Surrealist and Dadaist movements, with poet Joan Brossa in 1948.

Tàpies received the Golden Lion Award at the 45th Biennal of Venice. Retrospective exhibitions have been held at the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia in Madrid, the Fundació Joan Miró in Barcelona, the Galerie Nationale du Jeu de Paume in Paris, and at The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York.
