Ang Sang is an exciting Tibetan artist who is a rising star on the Contemporary South Asian art scene. He is redefining the Contemporary Neo-Pop movement in Tibet and the East with incredible paintings such as "Modern Dharma (Modern Prayer)" (2010-11). This visually complex oil painting is one of Ang's most dynamic examples of his singular and fresh painterly style that makes a socio-economic statement on the changing face of Tibet, China and the East. Here, he interrogates ancient calligraphic traditions and imagery in a seamless manner with the famous faces of today's global community. Ang Sang fuses images of Marilyn Monroe, creatures from Avatar, cartoonish self-portraits by famous Contemporary Chinese artist Yue Minjun, Panda Bears, images of Michael Jackson and more, all that interface with images from the 'old world' and the sacred. The use of negative space here underscores the loaded space and the 'weight' that the 'new Asia' carries at the center of the canvas.

Ang Sang is one of the first Tibetan artists infusing his work with irony and an element of kitsch in the deliberate intermix of Tibetan and Pop culture, featuring multi-ethnic cult personalities together with Buddhist sacred objects in a myriad of colors and symbols, signifying not so much a crash but co-existence of world cultures. This so-called "Tibetan Pop Art" is now becoming internationally recognized and embraced by scholars and collectors alike throughout Asia, Europe and now the US with his most recent exhibition in Hong Kong.
