The Souper Dress, with Original Envelope and Rare Inserts, ie. circa 1965

Screenprint, on Cellulose Dress
38 х 22 in. (96.52 x 55.88 cm.)
Unsigned, stamped, With the Souper dress label at the neck. It comes with the original brown mailing envelope, and inserts that the Souper Dress manufacturer used to send the dress back in the 1960s. It is extremely uncommon for the dress to still come with the accompanying mailer and inserts. This was a size "SMALL" - and most of the dresses on the market are Medium or Large. The Small size is extremely rare - and even more so in such fine condition. A rare find!

Lot description
This is the classic Andy Warhol "Souper Dress" which is in the permanent collection of the Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Fashion Institute of Technology and the Andy Warhol Museum. This superb piece of Sixties conceptual art was also exhibited at a 2000 Whitney Museum exhibition focusing on Warhol's contribution to fashion, and the image is reproduced in the monograph, The Warhol Look: Glamour, Style, Fashion, by Mark Francis, New York 1997.

Extremely rare in such fine condition with the original envelope and inserts. The size SMALL is extremely difficult to find -- and thus especially desirable.

It is a silkscreen dress that was sold by Campbell's Soup as a nod to the throwaway, "carefree" culture of the 1960's. The Souper Dress is an early, and indeed iconic example of the convergence of fashion, high art, advertising and industry- and is well recognized as a collectors item. This A-line dress is printed with the Campbell's Soup red, black and white labels. Other than the numerous paper folds, which are part of the design, this Warhol silkscreen is in excellent condition. It has never been hemmed or altered, and has no rips or tears and was never worn. It is also very rare to find this vintage work of art in such great condition, in the original envelope with the vintage historical inserts.

Many women in the Sixties who acquired these dresses took the instructions on the affixed label literally and disposed of these valuable dresses after receiving them. Thus, the Souper Dress is increasingly scarce and valuable, especially in this fine condition with no alterations. Nowadays these iconic and highly collectible pieces are often framed or exhibited in elegant plexiglasss boxes.

A must-have for serious Warhol fans and collectors, as well as designers and fashionistas- and a superb conversation piece.

Rare with all the original inserts and extras!
A marvelous piece of Pop Art ephemera from the fabulous Sixties.

Note that the comparables below typically do not include the additional items that accompany the lot on offer - and they are for the more common size "Medium".

This particular piece has been in the same private collection for nearly half a century. Own a piece of Pop Art history!
