Lot description
This series of four drawings, featuring Chicken, Duck, Noodle, and Onion soup, are strong examples of Andy Warhol's various studies for his iconic Campbell's Soup Cans. In the center of sepia-toned legal pages, thin, immediate lines outline the individual cans. Executed in 1985, they epitomize the tendency in Pop Art to merge everyday commercial items with high culture. The repetition of these relics of American consumer society shifts the focus to the possibility that certain objects may loose value as they are commodified. Unlike the 1962 masterpiece, the drawings contain the unmechanized, sketchy mark of the artist's hand. These drawings were executed at the opening for Warhol’s exhibition at the Louisiana Museum, Copenhagen, circa 1985.
