Lot description
The early print by Warhol was created for the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum's portfolio "Ten Works by Ten Painters." Warhol's most overt political work, he tackles racism head on by using the subject of police brutality towards Civil Rights activists in Birmingham. While he was experimenting with color in some of his other work at the time, he purposely rendered this image in black and white to highlight how the media (a newspaper image) removes the viewer from the emotional content of the subject.
