Lot description
André Kertész, Arthur Rothstein Exhibition, 1967. Gelatin silver print, 5 x 7 inches (12.7 x 17.8 cm). Stamped and dated.

Born in 1894 in Budapest, Kertesz gained his bacehlor’s degree from the Hungarian Academy of Commerce in 1912. In 1914 he was drafted into the Austro-Hungarian army. He became known for photographing the “unimportant” memories of the war; soldiers resting and laughing, etc. After the war, he found he was unable to fully support himself with his art, so he returned to the Stock Exchange in Budapest for several years (where he had worked previously before the draft). In 1925, he moved to Paris and became a freelance photographer for numerous magazines. He met and photographed artists such as Marc Chagall, Piet Mondrian and Alexander Calder, amongst others. In 1964 he was acknowledged internationally with his exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. He died in September of 1985.
