Lot description
"Molotov Cocktail" (1991) is an exciting, unique acrylic and silkscreen on canvas by the leading Soviet émigré artist and major exponent of Pop art in Russia, Alexander Kosolapov, who is famous for his paintings that associate political symbols and ideological figures with consumer products, such as the Coca-Cola bottle here. His work has been widely collected and included in major exhibitions on Russian contemporary art. This work can be seen as a political commentary on the post-Stalinist/post-Soviet period in Russia’s history. This painting measures 37 x 44 inches, is unframed and in excellent condition.

Post-Soviet artist Alexander Kosolapov (b.1943, Moscow) has lived and worked in New York City since 1975. Three years later in 1978, the SotsArt movement—Soviet Nonconformist Art which combined elements of Socialist Realism, Western Pop Art, and referencing Dadaism within a conceptual framework—was founded by Russian émigré colleagues Komar and Melamid. With irreverent references to Pop Art, Kosolapov often appropriates forms of food product and commodity logos as abstract symbols of Russian ‘state’ power and Soviet political symbolism in his imagery.
