Lot description
Alexander Calder’s fascination with line and color is not only realized in his three-dimensional, kinetic sculptures, but is also evident in his two-dimensional works on paper. Stepping away from sculpture, Calder often explored other mediums, frequently creating lithographs, like this late ‘Untitled’ work. Calder’s prints reflect the whimsy with which he created art, the bright primary colors of his sculptures taking two-dimensional form.

American artist Alexander Calder (1898–1976) is synonymous with twentieth century abstract art. He was introduced to art at a very young age by his father and continued to explore various mediums and styles throughout his life and career. He invented the mobile form by suspending objects in space in the 1930's. Although Calder created not only mobiles, but paintings, prints, jewelry and other forms of art, he continued to focus on balance and movement throughout his career. Since his death in 1976, Calder's work has gone on to be exhibited at numerous museums and galleries nationwide including Gagosian Gallery, New York., NY (2005), the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art , San Francisco, CA (2006) and the Museum of Modern Art, New York, NY (2007) among others.
