Lot description
After Alexander Calder (US, 1898-1976). "Star". 1975. Hand woven maguey jute fiber tapestry in colors. This work is in excellent condition with no condition issues. There is no fading, curling or loss in any manner. "Star" is a rare and stunning example of the hand woven maguey jute fiber tapestries in colors that Alexander Calder designed in response to the crisis of the devastating earthquake that hit Nicaragua in 1972. A tapestry by Calder from this series is always in demand, yet one in such mint condition is particularly desirable and rare. This tapestry has been in a select US Private collection archivally stored for years.

On December 23, 1972 three earthquakes hit the Nicaraguan city of Managua, with more than an estimated 18,000 deaths, 40,000 injured and 200,000 homeless, the city was totally destroyed in less than 24 hours. World renowned visual artists donated their works and millionaire Catalina Meyer, better known as Kitty Meyer, a Manhattan socialite who grew up in Nicaragua, a Polish Jew who escaped to that country during WW II, spearheaded a colossal visual arts project to which this fantastic tapestry belongs.

Part of Meyer's fundraising involved a project with American artist Alexander Calder, who became personally committed to this cause. Calder created select gouache on paper designs to be translated by the weavers into flat works in two mural sizes of 6’x 8’ and 5’ x 7’ (that are interchangeably called tapestries, wall hangings or floor mats). Calder hired local Masaya (local Nicaraguan) and Guatemalan weavers and paid four times to local rate to weave these wall hangings, each in limited editions of 100 per design. Also usually stitched at the bottom right corner are Alexander Calder’s initials, in this case an overlapping “CA” or other times simply “Calder” spelled out. Because these works are intrinsically stunning, these works including "Star" are typically displayed on walls.
