Abstract Galaxy Composition by Alexander Calder.

Alexander Calder (1898-1976) is synonymous with twentieth century abstract art, and one of the most celebrated American sculptors of the twentieth century. Internationally celebrated for his wholly unique, whimsical pieces, Calder invented the ‘mobile’ form in the 1930's by suspending objects in space. He is best known for incorporating kinetic elements into his sculptures which are carefully weighted and balanced, remaining sensitive to the movement of the wind or the motions of the viewer. He continued to focus on balance and movement throughout his career, producing mobiles, stabiles, drawings, paintings, jewelry, and set designs. He has had several retrospectives, and, among many other awards, was honored with a Presidential Medal of Freedom and the Bicentennial Artist Award from the Whitney Museum of American Art in 1976.
