Lot description
One of Katz's signature "cutouts" (based on one of seven cutouts from the wall piece "John & Loft" (1969), "The Striped Shirt"-- often called "Boy with Striped Shirt"-- depicts the artist's son in the bold, vibrant style characteristic of his work.

This aquatint in eight colors on Arches Cover paper was published by the Metropolitan Museum of Art and is fully referenced in the catalogue raisonne of Alex Katz's printed works, with a dramatic full page reproduction (Maravell, 125). In the Artist's Notes on "Striped Shirt," Katz writes, "I think the colors on this print are quite extraordinary... the plates for this print were cut to the shape of the boy. This created some printing complexities but in the end it all came out rather smoothly."

This oversize graphic work measures 46 by 21 inches and is hand signed and numbered in pencil from the relatively low edition of only 80. It bears the printers' distinctive chop mark lower right. There were no printer's proofs created.

Alex Katz first emerged on the New York art scene in the mid-Fifties during the heyday of Abstract Expressionism and before the birth of Pop Art, but always worked independently of these movements. Over the course of six decades, Katz has been the subject of numerous international exhibitions, including solo shows at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the National Portrait Gallery in London, the Jewish Museum in New York, the Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh, the London Institute of Contemporary Arts, the Irish Museum of Modern Art in Dublin, the Albertina Museum in Vienna, the Saatchi Collection in London, the Brooklyn Museum, the Musée Grenoble, the Deichtorhallen Hamburg, and the Museum fur Moderne Kunst in Frankfurt. Katz has also been included in notable group exhibitions, such as the Whitney Biennial in 1991, 1979, and 1973, and its precursor, the Whitney Annual, in 1967. Katz was honored with an exhibition of his prints at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston entitled "Alex Katz Prints" that opened on April 28, 2012. As the subject of over 200 solo exhibitions internationally, Katz has truly established a permanent place in the contemporary canon.

A bright, good impression; slight handling marks on the bottom edges near margins (see photograph) which will frame out fine.
