This work is dramatically reproduced as a full page color plate in the 1983 catalogue raisonne of Alex Katz' works on paper, "The Complete Prints" by Nicholas P. Maravell. "The Olympic Swimmer" is based upon a painting called the "Swimmer # 3" (1973). In the Artist's Notes section of the Maravell's raisonne, Alex Katz says that the painting and the screenprint are similar "except that I made the print a vertical image and the painting was horizontal." Katz further remarked, "This print had a great deal of energy and I am very happy with it."

Alex Katz first emerged on the New York art scene during the heyday of Abstract Expressionism and before the birth of Pop art, but always worked independently of these movements. His distinctive style, referred to as Katzian portraiture, as epitomized by the "Olympic Swimmer" attest to the artist’s attention to detail, economy of means, and use of color & cut out imagery. Most of all it exemplifies the artist's consummate technique; indeed, Katz is as celebrated for his achievements in printmaking as for his paintings.

A major touring retrospective was organized by New York’s Whitney Museum of American Art in 1986, and Katz has exhibited widely all over the world. His works are in the collections of The Museum of Modern Art, New York; Tate, London; the Musée National d’Art Moderne, Paris; and the Nationalgalerie, Berlin, among many others. In 1983 there was also a major print retrospective of Katz' works at the Brooklyn Museum, and there have since been many museum surveys of his works on paper.

With an exhibition at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston entitled "Alex Katz Prints" that opened on April 28, 2012, Katz shows no signs of slowing down. After being the subject of over 200 solo exhibitions internationally, Katz has truly established a permanent place in the contemporary canon.
