Lot description
For almost fifty years, American artist Alex Katz has created portraits of friends and family, particularly of his wife, Ada. In this print, Katz gives viewers a glimpse into his personal life. Sitting side by side, he and his wife pose, formally dressed, in classic family portrait style, giving this work a sense of timelessness as it calls to mind centuries of family portraits. Ada continues to be Katz's greatest muse and favorite subject in his work.

Alex Katz (b. 1927) is an American figural artist best known for his paintings, prints, and sculptures. Katz’s style, associated with the Pop Movement, transforms subjects of people and scenes of uneventful daily life, such as “Ada and Alex”. A portrait of the artist and his wife, into elevated iconographic images. Though his sitters were often close friends, (he painted his wife Ada frequently,) Katz generalizes the features of his subjects and reduces the work to formal properties of light, color, and scale making his art familiar to all possible viewers. Often compared to fellow pop artists such as, David Hockey and Roy Lichtenstein. Katz’s portraits reveal his ongoing pursuit to depict social interactions and language while his landscapes reveal his fascination with plein air painting.
