Lot description
“Tête de Femme,” a pencil and paper work executed in 1947, is an exquisite example of the dynamic style for which Giacometti is known. With expressive lines and energetic form, this work perfectly captures the artist’s personal and emotional response to his subjects.

The work is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from the Giacometti Committee, April 26, 2011, under the Alberto Giacometti Database, no. 1772.

Swiss artist Alberto Giacometti (1901-1966) was a major figure in the Surrealist Movement. Though his artwork is uneasily categorized as it is often linked to Formalism and Expressionism, Giacometti will always be remembered as a proponent of the Surrealist movement. He explained that his artwork, whether sculpture, painting, drawing or print, reflected how he emotionally responded to his subjects. Ultimately, Giacometti was one of the most influential artists of modernism, creating expressive paintings, portraits of stark figures and lyrical drawings that have never ceased to move the viewer. Giacometti has had recent solo exhibitions at Kunsthaus Zürich, Switzerland; The Museum of Modern Art, New York, NY; Musée Rath, Geneve, Switzerland; and Mitchell-Innes & Nash Gallery, New York, NY.
