Lot description
This work from 1987 entitled 'Condo' by Alan Belcher exemplifies the artist's love of combining photography with installation, as seen with this sculpture of stacked cinder blocks and photos. Carefully laid out in a curving arc are images of a condominium complex arranged on the surface which echo the blocks beneath. Paralleling the stacked cinder blocks to stacked groups of people living on top of one another in apartments, Belcher creates a powerful work which alludes to the sense of alienation and urban decay inherently found in city environments.

Known for his thought provoking and at times, controversial artwork, Canadian artist Alan Belcher (b.1957) creates complex pieces which push the boundaries contemporary art, form, and materials. Working primarily in photography and installation, Belcher infuses himself into these created objects with elements adapted from his experiences, such as Japanese calligraphy from his time spent abroad, as well as abstract expressionism. The artist received a degree in Japanese language from George Brown College, Toronto, Ontario in 1998 as well as a degree in Animation from Sheridan College, Ontario, Canada. His work has been widely exhibited in major galleries throughout the world, including the Corvi-Mora Gallery, London, U.K. (2010), Presentation House, Vancouver, Canada (2009) and Fotomuseum Winterthur, Zurich Switzerland (2008) among others. His work will be included in an upcoming exhibition at Marianne Boesky Gallery.
