Lot description
Primarily exploring abstraction, Adolph Gottlieb's style ranges from controlled geometric compositions, to wildly explosive works which maintain a brilliant color palette and dynamically expressive forms. Gottlieb’s attention to proportion and glowing colors are perfectly capture in this late work “Lemon Yellow Ground.” His remarkable abilities as an abstract artist are exemplified in this work as he transports the viewer into a world filled with rich tones and dynamic patterns.

Impressionist artist Adolph Gottlieb (1903-1974) was part of the New York School of Abstract Expressionists, and his work was exhibited alongside that of Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, Clyfford Still, Hans Hofmann and Mark Rothko. Gottlieb had a large impact on the contemporary art world for he was one of the founding members of “The Ten,” which was a group of artists that advocated abstract and expressionist painting. Since his death in 1974, his work has been exhibited in numerous retrospective shows including ones at the American Contemporary Art Gallery, Munich, Germany (2007), the Musée d´Art Moderne et d`Art Contemporain Nice, Nice, France (2008) and the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, Venice, Italy (2010) among others.
