Lot description
Mimicking classical images of tragedy from art history, the young male protagonist in Adi Nes’ photographic tableau sits alone in the shadows under an aura of isolation and helplessness. As a gay man, Nes has continually been identified as an outsider, frequently facing the pangs of separation. Simultaneously, Nes’ feelings of alienation and struggle relate on a broader level to the collective experiences of a war-stricken Israeli nation attempting to define a new and distinct identity. Employing familiar allegorical narrative and structure, Nes examines the universality of these themes to explore human relationships and the contemporary human condition.

As a gay Israeli artist, Adi Nes (b.1965) concerns himself with representations of struggle and identity, both personal and shared. His vivid, staged photographs address themes of masculinity and power through art historical and cultural references that he subtly infuses with personal experiences. Born in Kiryat Gat, Israel, Nes graduated from Bezalel Academy of Art and Design, Jerusalem, Israel in 1992. The following year, Nes received the Sandra Jacobs Foundation Prize and scholarship from the Department of Plastic Arts, Ministry of Culture. He was also awarded the 2000 Nathan Gottesdiener Foundation Israeli Art Prize and the 2003 Constantiner Prize for Photography, both from the Tel Aviv Museum of Art. His works have been featured in numerous exhibitions throughout the world, with recent solo shows at Jack Shainman Gallery, New York, NY (2012); Sommer Contemporary Art, Tel-Aviv, Israel (2012); Galerie Praz Delavallade, Paris, France (2012); Center for the Arts, Toronto, Canada (2012); Museo Nazionale Alinari della Fotografia, Florence, Italy (2011); Instituto Nazionale per la Grafica, Rome, Italy (2010); and The Contemporary Jewish Museum, San Francisco, CA (2009). Nes currently lives and works in Tel-Aviv, Israel.
