Seller's Description:
This minimal and evocative sand box—from the highly-sought-after series of 'time machines' by JOSEPH CORNELL—implies the sand passing through an hourglass while it also describes movement. The sealed glass box contains a metal spring, possibly from a clock, and deep marine blue colored sand, as if the color of the sea itself. The map-like grid background supports the cartography of time imagery, while altogether the work is sublime and minimal. The artist’s sand boxes were recently exhibited in a retrospective that travelled from the Smithsonian Museum to the Peabody Essex Museum to the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.
JOSEPH CORNELL's three-dimensional collage boxes are de rigueur in Dada/Surreal collections, however his sand boxes also translate well in collections of minimal and conceptual art.
