Wolf Kahn’s exceptional ability to create dynamic, richly-toned landscapes evoking the expressive sensibility of Rothko’s abstract fields of color is perfectly realized in “Sheep Farm on a Connecticut River”, an exquisite oil on canvas painted during the height of the artist’s career. In this work, Kahn creates a jewel-toned sunset steeped with a sky of blazing orange and a river of glowing purples and blues, conveying the luminous wonder cloaked within the natural world.

Contemporary artist Wolf Kahn (B. 1927, Stuttgart, Germany) is known for creating lyrically beautiful landscapes in pastels, paint, and watercolor. Kahn trained with Hans Hofmann during the late forties and is considered one of the foremost landscape artists of his time. His vividly colored art pushes the boundaries between traditional landscape paintings and abstract color field works. Kahn has received numerous awards over the course of his career including a Fulbright Scholarship, a John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship, and a American Academy of Arts and Letters award, among others. His work is in major museums worldwide, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, the Los Angeles County Museum, in Los Angeles, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
