Seller's Description:
Fascinated by the Universe’s vast unknown, Hoon Kwak attempts to unravel the mysteries with his multi-layered, abstract paintings. Exploring the Universe’s obscurity by depicting its intricacies, Kwak personifies the Universe’s ‘CHI’, meaning energy, through brushstrokes of varying weights and colors. Executed in acrylic, this large-scale 'CHI' painting demonstrates the unique energies of Kwak's brushstrokes. Here, the manic, stimulated energy of the tight group of thin lines at the top of the canvas appears to be kept at bay by the larger patches of color and spread out, thick lines, which seem to move slowly in an opposing direction. Representing the complex and often conflicting forces that make-up the unknown, Kwak proves how an individual chi is influenced by a multitude of elements.
Hoon Kwak (b.1941) earned his BA from Seoul National University, Seoul, Korea in 1963 and later moved to Los Angeles, CA to attend California State University, where he earned his MA in 1980. Kwak remained in California to complete his MFA in 1982. His spiritual works have been featured in museum and gallery exhibitions throughout the world, including solo shows at the National Museum of Art Contemporary, Seoul, Korea (2005); Andrew Shire Gallery, Los Angeles, CA (2003); Kumho Museum of Art, Seoul, Korea (2000); and Birmingham Museum of Art, Birmingham, AL (1996).
