The Lamentation of Christ is a very common subject in Christian art from the High Middle Ages to the Baroque. This event has been depicted by many different masters including Rembrandt, Giotto, Durer and Mantegnia, to name just a few.
This series by Qiang Jin is also a direct result of the spread of Catholicism in the far East, the artist has stated "Liuhe (where the photographs in the series were staged and where the people photographed come from) is said to be the largest Catholic village in China with a population of nearly 10,000. Over 95% of the villagers believe in Catholicism. The first priest came there in 1846; and the first cathedral was constructed in 1894. I have been taking photographs in Liuhe for years. I am so familiar with the locals that I almost become a member of this big catholic “family”. Since I was born near this area, I can chat with the local people in their dialect fluently and I know their rites very well. Since the very beginning, I have tried every moment to get the icon that could touch me and as well as the locals through my documentary photographs. After years of practice, I think I finally found it. "
Qiang Jin was featured at Photo Miami in 2009 and Photo LA in 2010.
