“Minter hones in (literally and figuratively) on the imperfect trappings of high couture in large-scale color photographs and paintings that at once magnify, fetishize, and abject their subjects. The ambivalence in Minter’s works does not leave us any less seduced by them: we simply have a harder time cleaning up and simplifying the true nature of our much more complicated desires.”
-2006 Whitney Biennial Catalogue
Marilyn Minter (b. 1948) can be compared to an alchemist who transforms gore into glamour with photographs and photo-realistic paintings. The phrase "dirty realism", popularized by a 1983 issue of the magazine Granta, comes to mind when looking at Minter’s work. Seductive, sensual and decadent, Minters work continues to be highly in demand with collectors and museums.
She has had solo exhibitions at Salon 94 (2006 & 2009) and the San Francesco MoMA (2005). In 2006, she was featured in the Whitney Biennial. In 2007, she envisioned a centerfold for collaboration with Parkett magazine. Upcoming projects include: a solo exhibition at Regen Projects in fall 2009. In 2010 Minter will have a solo exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Cleveland, Ohio.
Minter does not crop or digitally manipulate her photographs.
